Newberry College is a private, residential, co-educational college with a diverse student population. Watercolor USA Honor Society is a unique organization formed in 1985 from a broad based assemblage of inventive artists. WHS endeavors to cultivate and promote an interest in watermedia painting via the venue of the Watercolor USA exhibition. Through its leadership, collaborations, services and advocacy for the kinetic medium of watercolor, WHS strives to benefit its members and the general public. WHS members contribute their time and efforts within the Society and serve as ambassadors at large to champion the advancement of watercolor painting. The Mission of Watercolor USA Honor Society is to focus attention on the Springfield Art Museum as a repository for conserving, preserving, and collecting watercolor painting. The permanent collection of the Springfield Art Museum will provide the ultimate perspective on watercolor painting from the twentieth century and beyond. Through the solicitations of gifts to the permanent collection and by direct purchases of significant works of art, WHS partners with the Springfield Art Museum as it builds the most formidable collection of contemporary watermedia works in existence.
To be inducted into the National Honor Society, or NHS, students must have good grades, but that isn't all. To be accepted, students must meet the four National Honor Society pillars: scholarship, leadership, character and service. When students become juniors in high school, if their academic grade point average is high enough and they meet the additional national honor society requirements, they become eligible for application into NHS. Understanding each of the National Honor Society pillars can help students apply successfully. When a high school student enters into his junior year of high school, his grade point average, or GPA, will determine if he is eligible for membership into the National Honor Society.
To be considered, a student must have an 85 percent average. In many schools, the GPA must be 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; however, schools can raise the required average, so it is important that students familiarize themselves with the scholarship standards at their school. Once elected, the student cannot fall below that average. If she does, she can be removed from the National Honor Society. Leadership is another pillar of the National Honor Society. Students should demonstrate leadership within the school community. Because NHS students become leaders within the school, they should showcase the ability to solve problems and act as role models for their peers. Positions within other organizations , such as student government, peer leadership and sports teams, provide students with opportunities to assume leadership roles.
Students should also support and participate in school activities according to the guidelines of NHS. In addition to good grades and leadership qualities, students in the national honor society must also show that they have good character, since these students model a higher standard of conduct. Students must conduct themselves in a respectful manner. Students should have no blemishes on their discipline records, and the faculty must consider them upstanding citizens. Teachers and other references are asked to rate students on a scale from one to four, with four being the highest score. A student with exemplary character makes decisions based on the rules of moral conduct. Finally, students applying for the national honor society must demonstrate service to their communities. Students must offer their time to the school or local community without any form of compensation. During their time in high school, eligible students should be engage in volunteer work or community service. Students should document these experience for the induction process. Once they become members of NHS, students must continue their commitment to service by volunteering their time at school events and other community activities. This can include volunteering with campaigns, tutoring younger children, or a host of other activities. Although there isn't a national requirement for the amount of service hours, some schools might have more specific requirements for their NHS students.

Each year SPNHA faculty award the most outstanding MPA students who are nearing graduation. In 2012, the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council established the Nu Lambda Mu Honor Society to recognize students dedicated to the study of nonprofit management, philanthropy, and social entrepreneurship/enterprise. The mission of the Nu Lambda Mu Honor Society is to advance the study of nonprofit organizations and their function in society and to promote scholarly achievement among those who engage in these academic pursuits. Nu Lambda Mu seeks to recognize those who, as part of a degree or certificate program, have excelled in coursework and as a leader to others. By encouraging rigorous study in the field of public serving organizations, the Nu Lambda Mu Honor Society promotes the professionalization and ethical conduct of all who pursue careers of service in the nonprofit, social sectors, philanthropy and/or social entrepreneurship/enterprise.

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest honor society in the country and was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. It honors academic excellence and outstanding scholarly achievement in the liberal arts and sciences. Fewer than seven percent of all U.S. Phi Beta Kappa chapter and it took nearly thirty years of effort for Gustavus Adolphus College to qualify for a chapter after a rigorous scrutiny by the national society. Further, fewer than ten percent of all graduating seniors in liberal arts majors are invited to join. Typical service projects include tutoring programs for underclassmen, reading development for elementary students, fundraising for local or national charities, blood drives, serving meals at local food banks and soup kitchens, and servicing the needs of the elderly in the community. In order to undertake these responsibilities efficiently, most chapters elect officers to lead the chapter and assist the adviser during the year. An important responsibility for chapter officers is ensuring that all chapter members maintain their membership obligations and live up to the standards of the chapter by being positive role models on campus and in the community. The board of directors of NASSP is also the governing board of the National Honor Society. General operational control is vested in the NHS/NJHS National Council, composed of ten principals and advisers.
The executive director of NASSP is an ex officio member of the national council, and the NASSP director of student activities serves ex officio as secretary to the council. National activities of NHS are coordinated by the national office staff, located at the headquarters of NASSP in Reston, Virginia. In 2001, twenty-two organizations existed at the state level supporting NHS and NJHS activities. These organizations are all affiliated with the national office, but operate independently. Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society acknowledges the scholarship of nontraditional students continuing their higher education.
